i am walking through the desert
i see the old man’s footprints
i kneel where I am standing
i know he has been here not long before
looking to the horizon
the afternoon sun burns above me
i think he walked straight into that star

a cloud swirling gold
so close i feel i could stroke it with the back of my hand
i climb aboard, i am not alone
we see the old man’s footprints
walking straight into a stone…
we gaze in wonder as the stone becomes a mountain
wander lightly in her meadows always following his path

a stand of silver aspens softly invites simple smiles
feel the deep love of trees
you’re gazing at the high peaks…
where the old man is sitting pure as the snow
listening to the spirit clouds warm in the cold
i want so much to reach him
embrace his silent wisdom
love your brave rich body but he needs to be alone…
i feel a distance, io cannot comprehend it
i want so much to rend it
but you’ve heard the old man’s call

in a far distant woods,
sad, but shielded by the tender embrace
of a canopy of leaves
i see the old man’s footprints,
reflecting the half moonlight in the dark mulchy soil….
i am alone
but these footprints are everywhere i go
they are his, they are yours’
soon… they’ll be my own
